HEADING HOME

Posted on September 20, 2022 at 12:42 PM by Mary Ann Fussell

What a very productive week of meetings we had in Washington DC. I’m honored that we get the opportunity to speak directly to the military leadership of this country. Lt General Evans is an honorable man who didn’t get where he is by accident. So, to say I was honored that he would take the time to sit down with me and talk about Fort Polk and our community, is an understatement, as we continue to move forward.

The greatest surprise of the meeting is that Col Thomas; who was our Garrison Commander, is now Lt General Evans XO. We all here in Leesville miss Col Thomas, his beautiful wife Telisha and their two boys. I even got to attend several classes with Mrs. Thomas, and Col Thomas and I attended a meeting together as well. You never know where or in what position the contacts and friends you make will end up.

I heard a preacher once say “you better be careful how you treat people because one day they might be in the position that you need help from.” I’m feeling good about all of the meetings I attended and was so ready to bring back a good report. I even got to the airport 2 hours early, checked my bags and boarded the plane. Had my seat belt buckled and text my wife Traci I was headed home and was ready and awaiting take off. Then the captain comes on the intercom and says “we have a maintenance issue I’m going to need you all to unboard the plane.”

So, we did and of course people were upset but the ladies that bring you the drinks and cookies can’t fix the plane. The workers at the counter can find you a different flight but they can’t fix the plane either. As a matter of fact, I don’t want to fly on a plane that they just worked on anyway. I’m just glad they found an issue before we took off. I would rather be stuck in DC alive, than die trying to get home.

They gave me another ticket for 5 hours later and I’m good with that. I will stay right here until you get me a good plane with no issues. I’m just going to count my blessings and get home sometime tonight. And probably without my luggage because it was on a plane to North Carolina without me.

When something delays you in your daily life don’t forget that you will never know what that delay saved you from. Just be thankful and kind to those that have a job to do and at the end of the day you will be exactly where you are supposed to be.

Blessed Beyond Measure,
Your Mayor,
Rick Allen
