Mayor Rick Allen attended a celebration for retired Senator John Smith last night at Anderson Pumpkin Farms where he presented the senator with a proclamation naming October 27, 2022 as Senator John Smith Appreciation Day, citing the Senator's lifelong devotion to the State of Louisiana, the Parish of Vernon and the City of Leesville.
John Smith, a self-employed businessman, began his public service career as a member of the Vernon Parish Police Jury where he served as President from 1980 to 1983. In 1987 he was elected to the Louisiana State House of Representatives, where he served for twenty years, followed by an additional twelve years in the Louisiana Senate.
While in office, Senator Smith promoted faith-based issues, supported ethics-related bills, championed budget reforms and was a strong supporter of higher education and small business.
